Trapped in the Flash
The photographer, having grown up moving between China and the U.S., has always grappled with confusion about her cultural identity. Initially, she believed photography offered her a sense of security. Later, however, she came to see it as a weapon—a tool to fight against inequality. After high school, she began photographing many Chinese Americans, sparking movements for equal rights. Over time, she was increasingly embraced by the Chinese American community and, through her photography, found a sense of belonging within it. Yet, at a photography exhibition depicted in the play, the most significant piece symbolizing her cultural identity goes missing, reflecting her lingering uncertainty about fully embracing the identity of a Chinese American.
